　　前提是一种语用推论，它也是语用研究的一项重要内容。语言学上的这种前提指的是一个句子的先决条件。不管此句是肯定还是否定。它的前提不变。前提通常以实际的语言结构意义为依据，靠逻辑概念、语义、语境等推断出话语的先决条件，如：
　　Once Washington horSe was lost and he found it on a nearby farm．But hiS neighbor WOUld not give it back．Andasserted it he is own possession．Washington covered bothof the horse’S eyes and asked．“thiS house belongs toyou．Then can you tell which of hiS eyes iS blend?”‘‘theright．”Answered the neighbor．Washington moved hiS handfrom the right eye，and it appeared to bright and Clear．
　　“I’ve made a mistake．”the neighbor corrected hiS answer to the left．Washington moved away the other hand and the fact proved the neighbor to be wrong again．“on．What a mesS!I must have mistaken thiS house for another one．They are very similar”the neighbor stil1 wanted todefend himseIf．“that’S the end．Sir!”the policeofficer said．“It’S enough to prove that you are notthe owner of thiS house．Mr．Washington．You can take itback right now．”
　　华盛顿所提问题：“can you tellwhichofhiseyesis”，也就是说不管此句是肯定还是否定，它的前提不变。所以对这个问题的回答不能简单地只用“Yes”或“No”。当人们面临这种情况时，应该弄清讲话者的真实意图，然后酌情回答。这个问题的前提是“The horse iS blind”它使邻居作出假的断言，因为是一个疑问形式。没有任何人头脑如此清醒，一个具体的回答就会迷惑对方，并且无论马是否瞎眼，华盛顿都不会有责任承后果，这个故事表现了华盛的机智及他的邻居的滑稽可笑的一面，同时这种对比给幽默作了铺垫。我们遇到这种情况不难发现语用前提表达的形式各种各样，而且不带逻辑前提捉要描绘修辞或字面的前提一定要分析对各种特殊话语的理解。语用前提不是分析句子之间的关系，而是话语与语域的关系。一个句子从语用上要符合其所在的语域，即上下文能让人理解、推断出言语行为的意义。
