第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A.

Death Valley is one of the most famous deserts in the United States, covering a wide area with its alkali sand. Almost 20 percent of this area is well below sea level, and Badwater, a salt water pool, is about 280 feet below sea level and the lowest point in the United States.

Long ago the Panamint Indians called this place “Tomesha”— the land of fire. Death Valley’s present name dates back to 1849, when a group of miners coming across from Nevada became lost in its unpleasantness and hugeness and their adventure turned out to be a sad story. Today Death Valley has been declared a National Monument(纪念碑) and is crossed by several well-marked roads where good services can be found easily. Luckily the change created by human settlement has hardly ruined the special beauty of this place.

Here nature created a lot of surprising, almost like the sights on the moon, ever-changing as the frequent wind moves the sand about, showing the most unusual colors. One of the most astonishing and variable parts of Death Valley is

4

the Devil’ s Golf Course, where it seems hard for one to tell reality from terrible dreams. Sand sculptures(沙雕) stand on a frightening ground, as evening shadows move and lengthen.

56. _______ is the lowest place in the desert.

A. Tomesha B. Death Valley C. Bad water D. Nevada 57. The name of the valley comes from _______.

A. an Indian name B. a National Movement C. the local people D. the death of the miners

58. From the passage we can learn that _______.

A. people can find gas-stations, cafes and hotels in the desert B. it’s still not easy to travel across the desert C. no one had ever known the desert before the miners D. people have changed the natural sight of the desert 59. Devil Golf Course is famous for _______.

A. the frequent wind B. dream-like sights C. the colors of the sand D. the sand sculptures

60. From the passage we can see that the writer _______ the Death Valley. A. dislikes B. is fearful of C. appreciates D. is tired of

Minor cuts and scrapes(擦伤)often happen. It would be an accidental cut from a kitchen knife, a scrape from a bicycle accident or a scratch from a walk in the woods even though you never risk being careless. The following are five steps for our family to handling minor cuts with simple first aid, but you must remember to go to see a doctor, if you don’t know how to treat a cut or scrape with first aid. Step 1: Wash the cut with cool water. Try to remove any dirt or debris(碎片). Once it is washed, be sure to take a second look and wash again if the wound does not appear clean. At this point, you should be able to determine if the cut needs medical attention or if your home first aid kit(成套工具) can handle it.

Step 2: Once the injury is thoroughly clean, use a little alcohol on it. This will

5

sting(刺痛) for a second or two, but this can destroy the germs that may cause diseases.

Step 3: If the cut is still bleeding, apply direct pressure until the bleeding stops. However, rush to the hospital if you cannot stop the bleeding with direct pressure for a few minutes.

Step 4: Once the bleeding has stopped, apply antibiotic(抗菌素的) ointment to cleaning and drying of the cut or scrape.

Step 5: Dress the wound with a bandage. Continue to apply fresh antibiotic ointment and bandages until it is healed.

Cuts and scrapes are easy to take care of with a well stocked first aid kit. This is not, of course, intended as medical advice. These are merely the steps our family has used many times with great success. Please seek suitable medical attention if a cut is deep, if you don’t feel you have cleaned the wound completely, or after you clean and dress the cut it shows any signs of infection. 61. What message can we learn from the first paragraph? A. It is hard to avoid cuts and scrapes in our daily life. B. Carelessness leads to most of the cuts and scrapes. C. The writer’s family hardly need any medical help.

D. Children should not be permitted to do dangerous sports. 62. Alcohol is used to treat cuts because ____. A. it can stop bleeding for a short while

B. it can clean the cuts better so that they will not get infected C. it can decide whether medical help is needed D. can make sure that the cuts can be healed quickly 63. The first aid used to treat cuts in the family ____.

A. makes people free of injuries B. depends on a well stocked first aid kit

C. is effective all the time is effective all the time D. is difficult to master at the beginning

64. Which of the following situations can we deal with at home with first aid? A. We don’t know how to give first aid to those injured. B. The cuts are hard to clean completely. C. The cuts are not infected.

D. The bleeding can’t be stopped within a few minutes.’

The artist Grandma Moses became famous for her simple, bright, cheerful paintings of American farm life. Her full name was Anna Mary Robertson Moses. But she was known to everyone as Grandma Moses because she did not

6

begin to paint seriously until in her seventies.

Born on a farm in New York, Anna had little schooling. Her days were filled with farm chores. But she often found time to make pictures.Soon, however, she became too busy to draw or paint. At the age of 12, she went to work as a servant for a family nearby. She worked for other people for many years. Then, when she was 27, she married Thomas Moses, a farmer. And they began raising a family of their own.

Anna Moses could no longer do heavy farm work with age. Then, in her seventies, she began to paint in oils. Her pictures showed things she recalled from childhood-farm scenes, ice-skating, bringing home the Christmas tree.Later, she began to display her art at county fairs. Her pictures recorded a way of life that was quickly passing away.People everywhere loved these happy scenes, and soon her paintings were shown in art galleries.Grandma Moses became famous partially on account of her age, but mainly because her approach to art was modest and simple compared to many other painters of her time.Without formal training or even knowledge of Modernism, she relied on her own simple techniques to create her landscapes and scenes. She continued to paint almost until her death, on December 13, 1961 , at the age of 101.

The themes in her paintings provided the comfort of a rural life that many busy Americans treasured from their past. The threat of nuclear arms that appeared on television screens and in magazines had Americans starving for something more.Grandma Moses' art appealed to those who had lost hope for the future. Her classic paintings still appear on TV commercials, greeting cards, and magazine and book covers.

65.What can be inferred from the fact that Grandma Moses picked up a

paintbrush? A.She had no other ways to kill time. B.She had had a love for painting since her childhood. C.Her friend and family suggested it. D.She needed to make a living by selling her paintings. 66.The key reason for her success is ___ . A.her old age B.her lack of training C.her plain style D.her modern

knowledge

67.We can know from the passage that ______. A.her paintings expressed the reality of her old age B.her paintings raised people's hope for the future C.many Americans were interested in purchasing art works

Dynasty 1,500 years ago,but it has always meant something rather different. During the communist revolution, from the 1920s to early 1950s, it was widely used to refer to landholders and gentry who would bully those beneath them.

This new usage of the term took off in September after a widely-shared joke about a rich, but unhappy man, who goes to a Buddhist monk for advice, expecting to be told to live a more simple life. The monk replies instead with the phrase: \

Chinese Internet users are highly creative in their use of language, and are constantly inventing, and re-inventing words as a way of getting past censorship(审查) rules. My students often tell me that they don’t have “enough time” to do all their schoolwork.

My reply is often a brief “You have as much time as the president.” I usually carry on a bit about there being twenty-four hours in the day for everyone, and suggest that “not enough time” is not an acceptable explanation of not getting something done.

Once in graduate school(研究院), I tried to prove to one of my professors by saying that I was working hard. His answer to me was, “That’s irrelevant(不相关的). What’s important is the quality of your work.” Since then I have. had time to think carefully about the “hard worker” dodge (诀窍) , and I have come to some conclusions—all relevant to the problem of how much time we have.

If you analyze the matter, you can identify two parts of the problem: There is, of course, the matter of “time”, which we can think of as fixed. Then there is the problem of “work” during that time. But, as my professor suggested, it’s not how hard one works but the quality of the product that’s important.

That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work. That concept is perhaps best explained by a sign I once saw on the wall in someone’s office: “Don’t work harder. Work smarter.” There is a lot of sense in that idea.

If you can’t get more time, and few of us can, the only solution is to improve the quality of the work. That means thinking of ways to get more out of the same time than we might otherwise get. That should lead us to an analysis of our work habits. Since “work” for students usually means “homework”, the expression “work habits” should be read as “study habits”.

Then, as a smart student, you will seek to improve those skills that you use in study, chiefly reading and writing. If you learn to read better and write better, there are big benefits that pay off in all your studies.

72. From the passage, we know that the author is probably _______ . A. a novelist B. a poet C. an educator an educator D. an engineer 73. We can infer from the second paragraph that we students still _______ . A. can meet the president B. can get everything done well C. have enough time D. should accept the explanation 74. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The author’s students make good use of their time to do all their homework. B. You’ll try to improve your skills in reading and writing if you’re a clever student.

C. The author tried to tell the professor that he/she (author) had done a good job.

D. You can’t improve the quality of the work if you can’t get more time.

9

75. What’s the passage mainly about?

A. No one can get more time. B. Students don’t have enough time.

C. Don’t work harder; work smarter. D. Read better and write better. 第四部分 写作(共两节,满分35分)

I became a student journalist after severe competition against many other applicants. Then I attended a three-day training course given by the local newspaper, which equipped me with some basic knowledge about how to become a journalist. After that, I worked with some experienced journalists and editors for two weeks, during which I learned a lot about how to interview, write reports, edit and take photos, which are all parts of journalists’ daily tasks.

From my experience, I realize that to be a journalist, one must have a sharp mind and a good nose for the news. It is also important to know how to communicate with others.

This is what I can share with you. Can you tell me what is happening to you? Yours,
