I. Reading Comprehension Passage 1

For ages, sailors have said that it is good luck to see dolphins swimming alongside boats. Their presence meant that land was near, which would be vital information if a boat and her crew were in danger. Some dolphins have even protected shipwrecked sailors from sharks. It is no wonder that these unique and fascinating creatures have long been known as our friends.

You may think dolphins are fish, but they are actually mammals. They are related to whales and porpoises, and they evolved around 10 million years ago. Dolphins breathe air, give birth to live young, and feed them milk. They are social animals, living together in groups ranging in size of up to 12.In places rich in food, many schools can combine together to form schools of up to 1,000 dolphins.

Dolphins are thought to be intelligent animals because of their playfulness, curiosity, and quick ability to learn. They seem to communicate with each other through a combination of squeaks, whistles, and clicks. While scientists don't know what they are going on about, it is thought that dolphins are telling each other that food is nearby, or warning each other of approaching danger. Dolphins use sonar to discover an object's size, shape, and location. By sending out a series of clicks and receiving the echo that bounces off the object, they can differentiate between a shark and a boat.

Unfortunately, dolphins have faced increasing danger in recent years. Fishermen in pursuit of profitable tuna may accidentally trap dolphins in their nets, killing them in the process. These intelligent mammals of the sea deserve our protection and respect.

Passage 2

The city has always been an engine of intellectual life, from the 18th-century cafes of London, where citizens gathered to discuss chemistry and politics, to the Left Bank bars of modern Paris, where Picasso talked about modem art. Without the metropolis, we might not have had the great art of Shakespeare.

And yet, city life isn’t easy. Now scientists have begun to examine how the city affects the brain, and the results are depressing. Just being in an urban environment, they have found, impairs (损害) our basic mental processes. After spending a few minutes on a crowded city street, the brain is less able to hold things in memory, and suffers from reduced self-control. While it’s long been recognized that city life is exhausting, this new research suggests that cities actually dull our thinking, sometimes dramatically so.

One of the main forces at work is a complete lack of nature, which is surprisingly beneficial for the brain. Studies have demonstrated, for instance, that hospital patients recover more quickly when they can see trees from their windows, and that women living in public housing are better able to focus

1

when their apartments overlook a lawn. Even these glimpses of nature improve brain performance, it seems, because they provide a mental break from the urban life.

This research arrives just as humans cross an important milestone (里程碑). For the first time in history, the majority of people live in cities. Instead of inhabiting wide-open spaces, we’re crowded into concrete jungles, surrounded by traffic and millions of strangers. In recent years, it’s become clear that such unnatural surroundings have important implications for our mental and physical health, and can powerfully alter how we think. 6. Which of the following is the main idea of this passage? B

A. human attention is a scarce resource B. city life can make people very tired C. the city is an engine of intellectual life

D. an urban environment is damaging to the brain

9. What is the factor mentioned in the third paragraph that helps the hospital patients recover more quickly? A A. Nature.

B. Better treatment.

C. Experienced doctors. D. Good medicine.

10. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE? C A. Different aspects (方面) of an urban environment, such as the crowded streets, can lead to an increase in self-control. B. Small changes in urban design cannot reduce the negative side effects of city life. C. For the first time in history, the earth’s population is more urban than rural. D. A walk down a busy city street will improve brain performance. Passage 3

Your success in your studies will also depend upon your motivation(动机). This need or desire to achieve a certain goal can make the difference between success and failure. Motivation can come from two sources: from inside of you or from outside of you. In the first case, motivation comes from your hopes and expectations, from your desire to do something or to be someone. Study purposes that result from personal inner desires are individual, and various. If you have not already done so, you should think carefully about what you hope to gain from your studies, and why. You should set a goal and direct all your study efforts toward reaching it. A goal of this kind is important because it will determine the direction and degree of your motivation for study.

Not everyone is highly motivated from within and no one is continuously motivated from within. Fortunately there is another source of motivation:from outside. In education the most obvious kind of outside motivation is grades. For many students, course grades are an immediate, short-range motivation for study. This is one of the reasons for examinations and grades, but they must not become a goal in themselves. Grades help to motivate you from day to day, but they are only small, artificial steps to your ultimate goal. It would be wrong to set grades as your only ambition.

A textbook like this cannot provide you with motivation;that must come from yourself. But as an encouragement, it is useful to know that good study habits depend upon good motivation. And good study habits are important because they help you get more done in less time. It is not a matter of how much you study;more important is how well you study. 11. Inside motivation comes from______D______.

A. your need and desire

B. your hopes and expectations

C. your desire to do something or to be someone 12. Study purposes_____A_______.

A. are different from person to person C. share some common points

D. both B and C

B. are personal inner desires D. should be carefully made

13. If you haven't set a goal in your studies,______C______.

A. you will most probably become a failure

B. you will never be a good student

C. you may lose direction and lack motivation D. you won't have good study habits

2

14. According to the passage, why are examinations and grades necessary in education? B

A. Because they can make the difference between success and failure. B. Because they can motivate many students to study harder. C. Because they can check what you have gained from your studies. D. Because they are small, artificial steps to an ultimate goal.

15. If you want to be an efficient learner, you must_____D_______.

A. have clear study purposes

B. be always motivated from both inside and outside C. set grades as your ambition D. have good study habits

Passage 4

Ask three people to look out the same window at a busy street corner and tell you what they see. Chances are that you will receive three different answers. Each person sees the same scene, but each perceives something different about it.

Perceiving goes on in our minds. Of the three people who look out the window, one may say that he sees a policeman giving a motorist a ticket. Another may say that he sees a rush-hour traffic jam at the intersection. The third may say that he sees a woman trying to cross the street with four children in tow. For perception is the mind’s interpretation of what the senses — in this case our eyes — tell us.

Many psychologists today are working to try to determine just how a person experiences or perceives the world around him. Using a scientific approach, these psychologists set up experiments in which they can control all of the factors. By measuring and charting the results of many experiments, they are trying to find out what makes different people perceive totally different things about the same scene. 16. What does the passage mainly tell us? B

A. Perceiving has nothing to do with seeing. C. Seeing is closely connected to perceiving.

B. Perceiving differs from seeing. D. Seeing has much to do with perceiving.

B. with four children tied to each other with a rope C. with four children dragging a rope held by her D. with four children dragged in a small cart

18. According to the passage, perceiving is an action _____C______.

A. that tells us information through our eyes C. that explains what our senses tell us

B. that gives us senses in the mind

D. that makes our mind different

19. The psychologists are trying to draw their conclusion____D_______.

A. by asking different people to tell how they perceive the same scene B. by using a scientific approach in setting up their experiments C. by determining how a person experiences the world around him D. by measuring and charting the results of many experiments

20. Which of the following statements is NOT true? C A. Different people may perceive the same scene in a different way. B. That a policeman gives a motorist a ticket means the motorist is fined.

C. No people share the same perception when they are asked to see the same scene. D. The psychologists can control all of the factors in their experiments.

Passage 6

The only certainties I’ve found in life are death and change. One is an end, the other a beginning. Change is life. Without change there would be no growth, no understanding, no relating and no surprises. We are by nature changing beings. Still, we seem to fear and resist it more than any other aspect of life.

Healthy human beings welcome the opportunity to adapt to new experiences. In fact they are quite comfortable in a constant state of change. They know about the possibility of becoming someone new each moment. Only habit and indifference prevent the rest of us from having the same outlook.

When we don’t care, or submit ourselves to patterns and routines, we begin to stagnate. We are inclined to accept the comfortable illusion that life is a series of habits and conditioned responses. In reality this is a comfort more like a disease, which leads to a kind of intellectual and emotional death. We can allow ourselves and dynamic world to go to waste. Ellen Glasgow, an American novelist, said, “The only differences between a rut(车辙)and a grave are their dimensions.”

To accept new ideas and give up old values and habits is not always comfortable. It is often easier for us to deny that there may be more appropriate, more creative possibilities for our lives. We fail to understand that when we resist potentialities, life becomes at best a continual struggle; at worst, it passes us by and we are left alone and lonely.

26. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the first paragraph? C A. Change is as inevitable as death.

B. Some of us fear change because it leads to death. C. Change is characteristic of the life of human beings. D. Death is the inevitable result of change.

4

27. Which of the following is NOT true? A

A. All human beings want to be healthy by adapting to new experiences. B. Some people do not welcome change as a result of habit and indifference. C. Constant change results in comfort for some people.

D. Healthy human beings are not subjected to habit and indifference, and keep on trying to become someone new. 28. According to the passage, ―The only differences between a rut and a grave are their dimensions‖ suggests that __A____. A. if we regard life as a series of habits and conditioned responses, our life actually ends B. some people die a kind of intellectual and emotional death C. death is inevitable

D. too much comfort often results in death

29. The word ―stagnate‖ in paragraph 3 means ___B___. A. stop working hard C. become weak

B. stop developing D. fall ill

30. The author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph is ___C___. A. to tell us that if we resist change, we’ll suffer from loneliness in life

B. to show the reason why some people do not accept new ideas or give up old values and habits

C. to come to the conclusion that if we go against the law of change, it will be impossible for us to enjoy life D. to show that it is because of our desire to seek comfort that we tend to deny our lives

Passage 7

Many of us believe that a person’s mind becomes less active as he grows older. But this is not true, according to Dr. Lissy F. Jarvik, professor of psychiatry (精神病学) at the university of California, Los Angeles, and a board member of the New Center for Aging at the Veterans Hospital. She has studied the mental functioning of aging persons for several years. For example, one of her studies concern 136 pairs of identical twins, who were first examined when they were already 60 years old. As Dr. Jarvik continued the study of the twins into their 70s and 80s, their minds did not generally decline as was expected.

However, there was some decline in their psycho-motor speed. This means that it took them longer to complete mental tasks than it used to. But when speed was not a factor, they lost very little intellectual ability over the years. In general, Dr. Jarvik’s studies have shown that there is no decline in knowledge or reasoning ability. This is true not only into the 30s and 40s, but into the 60s and 70s as well.

As for learning new things, and ability to remember, studies by Dr. Jarvik and others show that the old are equal to the young. It is true that older people themselves often complain that their memory is not as good as it once was. However, much of what we call ―loss of memory‖ is not that at all. There usually was incomplete learning in the first place. For example, the older person perhaps had trouble hearing, or poor vision, or inattention, or was trying to learn the new thing at too fast a pace.

In the cases where the older person’s mind really seems to decay (衰退), it is not necessarily a sign of a decay due to old age. Often it is simply a sign of a depressed emotional state. This depression usually can be counteracted by counseling, a medical treatment with a psychologist, which fights depression. In American society, when an older person loses something, we tend to call him or her ―senile‖. But notice that when a younger person loses something, he does not blame it on senility or loss of memory. He finds some other excuse!

31. According to Dr. Jarvik’s studies, middle-aged and older persons should expect to ___D___.

A. remember less

B. reason better

C. learn fewer new things D. lose little ability to remember, reason or learn

32. A long term study of 136 pairs of twins showed that the only factor that declined over the years was _____B_____.

B. the psycho-motor speed

C. the decline in knowledge D. the loss of intellectual ability

33. Both younger and older persons should realize that _____D_______.

A. a sign of a decay due to old age is a natural law

B. mental decay due to aging is closely related to one’s health conditions C. a good emotional state can ensure a longer life

35. Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage? A

A. People, either young or old, tend to view their mental decay incorrectly. B. With ageing, one’s emotional state is on the decline.

C. Old people are not well educated and are thus slow to pick up new things.

D. The decline of intellectual ability is usually accompanied by the drop in psycho-motor speed.

Passage 9

6

The old familiar song, ―The Green, Green Grass of Home‖, used to bring a smile, but the current drought in Florida is turning so many green lawns into burned, brown fields ready for a fire to explode from a lightning strike or careless cigarette.

The situation is serious, but there are ways to solve the problem. According to Marshall McLuhan, a famous Canadian educator, ―Our age of anxiety is, in great part, the result of trying to do today’s job with yesterday’s tools ― with yesterday’s concepts.‖

Santa Barbara in California was faced with the same danger some years ago and the city officials called a meeting of the city engineers and water department to find new tools ― new concepts to save lawns.

The solution was gray water. The term gray water is given to the water we use when we wash our hands at the sink, take showers, wash clothes, etc. That water is going into the sewer (下水道) or septic tanks (化粪池) at an alarming rate.

The water can save lawns and trees without any harm. Santa Barbara developed an attachment that could be installed on the plumbing (管道设备) of the city homes for as little as $50 that would permit this valuable water to save lawns and landscaping from drying up without risk to the citizens. The city water department in Santa Barbara arranged to install the units and bill homeowners the small cost added to their low monthly payments until it was paid out.

The only gray water that is a threat is the water used in the washing machine and even that is safe to use on the lawn if you’re careful about what kind of soap you use.

III. Cloze Test Passage 1

Conversation begins almost the moment we come into contact with another and continues throughout the day with the aid of cell phones and computers. However, we are so often absorbed in conversation that we 1 sight of its true purpose and value.

One important aspect of a good conversation is that the words are properly used to express thoughts and feelings. We are 2 deep thoughts and strong emotions, yet our vocabularies are not enough for this expression, and many make little effort to expand that. Perhaps you see a movie that touches you deeply, yet you have the following conversation: “So, what did you think of the film?” “Oh, my God, it was so sad, I swear. I went through 3 a box of tissues(面巾纸). I was in tears.”This dialogue is 4 an effective way of expressing feelings. It gives no fact of how or why the movie truly 5 you. Such commonly-used phrases are certainly not enough to describe a deeply moving experience. However, not only 6 try to avoid overused words, you must also be careful in your selection. The purpose of expanding vocabulary is not to use the biggest or most impressive words, but to find those best suited.

What is lacking in many conversations is the ability to talk to another rather than just talking with that person. A 7 person will find that even in the most ordinary conversations. There are a thousand questions 8 to be asked if you have courage and a desire for exchange. Good conversations should not be 9 nonsense, but of a meeting of two sharing the human condition. By the time I finished high school, my interest in animals had grown, and I enrolled at a university to study biology. I learned soon enough that studying animals at this level was not in the animals’ best 21. I remember one midterm exam in 22 each student was handed a large, freshly-killed frog and instructed to dissect (解剖)and mark a set of body parts. I looked at the 23 frog in front of me and was saddened that her life was 24 away for such a slight reason.

A year later, in the same lab 25 I dissected the frog, I performed a small act of animal liberation. We were experimenting on fruit flies, and it was time to record the distribution of characteristics in their next generation. Flies were 26 in small plastic bottles. Counting the number of flies with white or red eyes required first exposing them to ether (乙醚) 27 they could not move. The flies were then spread onto a piece of white paper 28 and counted. When the data collection was complete, the flies had no further use, and our instructions were to put them into a small glass dish of oil at the center of each desk, which was to be their final resting place.

Once my little pile of flies had been counted, I pushed them off the edge of the paper. As we recorded our data, I kept one eye on them. Within minutes the pile was humming (嗡嗡叫) as tiny legs and wings beat their way out of the ether fog. I was extremely excited as they 29 flight. (1)随着工作时间的缩短,空余时间越来越多了

(2)如何利用空余时间 (3)利用空余时间的益处 答案:一

Use of Free Time

Some people may be so busy that they never have a spare moment, but it would be hard to find such people in contemporary times. Working hours are shorter and vacations longer, and there are more and more ways to spend the weekends. Aside from eating and sleeping, what do people do during the many hours when they are not at work or at school?

Use of free time often discloses much about one's tastes, values, interests and personality. What may be one man's leisure, however, might be another man's work. In leisure hours, some may turn to the humanities: literature, magic, art and here we might also mention movies and television. Others participate in sports, politics, voluntary work or hobbies at home. Still others like parties, travelling, or just loafing.

12

Obviously, the use of free time is a good means of relaxation, but its benefits go beyond this. All things people do in leisure hours enable them to gratify their wishes. This can contribute to intellectual growth and promote social activities as well.

So the good use of free time will make life rich, colorful and rewarding.

答案:二

2. Private Tutoring

(1)现在许多家长给孩子找家教的原因。 (2)家教的好处 (3)然而,我认为……

答案一

In order to study the tutors are with child, is good for knowledge, In order to follow up the knowledge. Not to let the child has a \help children find tutoring, but it's better for children of school teacher or the teacher teaches his subjects, they understand your child's gaps.

All the advantages and disadvantages, the key is to see how you handle that outweigh the costs!

Good is the education, the tutor is one, the teacher can further understanding of children, can be more planned for teaching. To improve a child weak link. This can improve the children's learning.

Some children are bad, because a tutor, what all depend on tutor. Some children tutor to don't know learning, slightly not to ask the question, no tutors the ability! Under a tutor for you. Do not represent the center of individual opinion for reference only!.

Due to the teaching in a one-on-one tutoring many children than class focus easily, so the effect is very good, especially maths, English, physics, chemistry, of course.

Tutor teacher in some aspects of general have very rich experience, such as the math teacher is obtained by the national mathematics competitions have graduated from the

famous Chinese winners or their learning method is also very easy to accept that children.

I think the key point: please tutor is not too good grades, some students establish confidence of learning, Please to do well at his tutor can cultivate competitive consciousness, top-notch and let your children learning better first determination. If your child learn well, a child's potential than usual, then you must ask a very good teacher (not necessarily in school teachers), such as the first name of tsinghua university, the world first chop graduated from Cambridge university - the teacher for your child to establish a person's example, the children are very important.

Now a lot of primary school students in our here please, they have been tutoring in class is a top, but through tutoring many textbooks, please study besides English, most of the content, graduated from elementary school students often is already didn't speak English, let teachers are very pretty.

答案二

Should family education be banned? Answers to this question vary greatly. Some people are in favor of the idea of family education. They always say that, if their child can get additional teaching, their child can run front of their classmates. And they also say that there are many homework of their child out of their knowledge. So they have to get tutor to teach them.

But other people consider it very harmful. The family education will spend the students’ sparetime, since the burden of our students’ study has already heavy; the students will no time to rest or exercise, which would affect the students’ health. In addition, the tuition of the tutor are high, some family can not afford.

There is some truth in both arguments, but I think the disadvantage of family education outweigh its advantages. Therefore a strict law should be issued to ban the family education. Without the family education, can’t the students come up with better ways to study?

3. Is it good for college students to have part-time jobs? (1)大学生可以勤工助学 (2)但打工也会带来问题

13

(3)我的观点 答案一

学生该不该勤工俭学

whether students who study inside the campus can get a part-time job or not is a topic which is being discussed .some students say yes to it because they think it can help them understand their parents' hardship while some don't agree with it, saying it's a waste of time for study.

in my opinion, a student can get a part-time job on condition that it doesn't have a side effect on his normal study in the daytime. as a matter of fact, the good effects that a part-time job brings to a student should be more than the side ones because taking a part-time job can bring students more chances to get in touch with society.

what's more, it also makes students experience the hardship of making money. however, students who get a part-time job should control the time for part-time job as well as pay attention to their safety when they go to work. besides, they should spend their income from the part-time job reasonably.

答案二

Study under a Work? study Program

Nowadays more and more college students are taking part?ime jobs as they have more time at their disposal. Some are eager to gain experience and improve their practical skills. Others want to earn some money and relieve the financial burden on their families.

But every coin has two sides. On the one hand, part?ime jobs do much good for us. We can develop our skills and improve our material life as well. On the other hand, we may not be able to put our heart into study in the “gold rush”. Worse still, those who fail to resist the temptation from society will take a wrong road, and even end up in prison.

In conclusion, the outcome of study under a work?tudy program depends on how we handle it. We should allot plenty of time to our study, keeping in mind that study should have priority over anything else for us college students, and money is not our purpose but a means to provide us with comfort.

4. Craze for Civil Service Examinations

(1)现在有越来越多的大学毕业生报考公务员 (2)引起此现象的原因 (3)你的看法

14

答案一

More Candidates for Civil Servant

Nowadays many college graduates apply for civil servant positions. It is true that the positions are ideal in terms of incomes, employment security and respect of others. However, the ever increasing number of applicants doesn’t necessarily mean a good thing. The fever for civil servant has brought some side effects. The side effects are listed as follows:

Firstly, many students apply for the positions for wrong reasons. Some of them apply just because their friends do it or because their parents want them. Some, instead of aiming at serve the people, have the intention of enjoying the interests and power brought by their future position. Secondly, too many candidates compete for limited positions. Take such hot positions as those in the judicial branch of government for example, it is estimated that one matriculate is selected out of 200 candidates. More worse, with the flow of most talents to such positions, those positions that are important for social welfare but inferior in personal welfare are left uninterested. This should arouse our deep concern.

For my part, college students should be cautious when deciding whether to apply for the positions. On the one hand, they should not follow others blindly. On the other hand, there are plenty of ways of employment and self-employment, so why crowd on one bus? In a word, the fever should be cooled down.

答案二

Craze for Civil Service Examinations

Every year hundreds of thousands of people in China take civil service exams conducted at various levels in the hope of becoming government employees. Among them, college graduates are a fast-growing force that can’t be ignored. The craze for being a civil servant is not limited to liberal arts majors, as it’s also gaining popularity among science and engineering students.

In the final analysis, this growing trend among the youngsters is mainly attributable to two factors – ambitions and comforts. On the one hand, many ambitious college graduates view these exams as a springboard to a higher social status, greater power and prestige, on which many of their other wishes rest. On the other, as being a civil servant generally means a stable income, enviable healthcare and pension programmes, as well as other comforts of life, it’s quite an appealing career option to many people, especially in this age of sluggish world economy.

Personally, the desire to be a government official is beyond reproach, as the nation and the people do need an injection of new blood into the civil service sectors. The fresh-faced college graduates, armed with lofty ideals, new vision, and strong drive, are undoubtedly among the best candidates.
