Every year millions of people are affected by natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornados, and bushfires. When a natural disaster affects a community, the resulting trauma (创伤) can influence those not directly affected by the disaster. Disasters of this type can be sudden and overwhelming. In addition to the cost on lives and property, disaster affects even those who are far away from the scene, as they can be easily hurt on learning about the disaster. Common reactions include feeling afraid, sad and helpless and children may also be bothered by upsetting thoughts and images. Remember any human being will have these kinds of reactions to such stressful events. Children will look to you and other adults for help. How you react to disasters gives them hints on how to act.
Children often see or hear the news many times a day through television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet. Seeing and hearing about local and world events, such as natural disasters, can make children more imaginative and they may suffer from more stress, anxiety, and fear. A child who feels afraid needs support. It’s your words and actions that will provide comfort. Calmly give them the factual information about the disaster and encourage them to talk about their feelings. Be as honest as you can about your own.
Parents should remember that it is important to talk to the child about what has been seen or heard. This will lessen the potential negative effects of the news and let them discuss their own ideas and values. While children can’t be completely protected from outside events, parents can help them to feel safe and to better understand the world around them. 56. The first paragraph mainly tells us that natural disasters _____.
A. cause great losses to people B. cause emotional harm to people as well C. are powerful in front of human beings D. happen from time to time 57. From the passage, we learn that _____________.

A. Parents hide their fears in front of their children. B. Parents stop their children watching the news. C. Parents talk honestly about the disaster.

Summer means the end of another school year in America. May and June are the graduation season. Centuries of tradition explains the special caps and gowns that students and professors wear at commencement (学位授予典礼) ceremonies. Top members of the class and invited guests offer speeches and advice. Finally the time comes for what everyone has been waiting for: one by one, the names of the students are called. They go to the front and shake hands with school officials. They might receive their official diploma that day or maybe a few weeks later. Graduations are always emotional events. But at Fort Hays State University in Kansas, in May this year, a graduate named Nola Ochs received special attention. Her major area of study was history. There was nothing unusual about that. But Nola Ochs is ninety-five years old. That made her the world’s oldest graduate for the keepers of the Guinness World Records. Until now they have recognized a ninety-year-old journalism graduate from the University of Oklahoma. Nola Ochs’s granddaughter graduated with her. One of the commencement speakers told the students to take a lesson from Nola Ochs and never stop trying. That is good advice on which to end our Student Series on higher education in the United States.
We began in September with the process of applying to an American college or university. Population experts at the Census Bureau say American colleges and universities will have 8,000,000 students this fall. Twenty years ago, there were 3,000,000. Today there are not only more college-age Americans, but more going to college, including older people and women. According to a report from two years ago, fifty-five percent of undergraduates were women, which was 15 percent more than it was twenty years ago. And fifty-nine percent of graduate students were women.

Homing pigeons are placed in a training program from about the time when they are twenty-eight days of age. They are first taught to enter the loft (阁楼) through a trap and to exercise above and around the loft and later they are taken away a short distance in baskets and set free. They are then expected to find their way home in the shortest possible time.
The head of a homing pigeon is comparatively small, but its brain is one quarter larger than that of an ordinary pigeon. The homing pigeon is very intelligent and will be to the point of stubbornness (顽强); some have been known to fly a hundred miles off course to avoid a storm. Some homing pigeon experts claim that this bird has a form of built-in radar that helps it find its own loft after hours of flight, for hidden under the head feathers are two very sensitive ears, and the sharp prominent (突出的) eyes can see great distances in daytime.
Why do homing pigeons fly home? They are not unique in this natural skill; it is found in most migratory birds (候鸟), in bees, ants, even turtles, which have been known to travel hundreds of miles to return to their homes. But in the animal world, the homing pigeon alone can be trusted with its freedom and trained to carry out the jobs that people demand. 64. The author’s purpose in writing the passage is to ___. A. convince us to buy a homing pigeon

launched. Environmentally friendly cloth bags will be distributed to Ito Yokado and Lotus Centre supermarkets in Beijing over the next two weekends. More than 15,000 of the reusable bags will be handed over by volunteers, which means they can take the place of 7.5 million plastic bags, according to the project leaders. “If people use a cloth bag at the supermarket for shopping, they can probably reuse it up to 500 times,” said Wang Chao, vice-director of World Vision China. Statistics from the organization indicate that the Chinese use 2 billion plastic bags every day. “In Ito Yokado’s five supermarkets in Beijing, we hand out 100,000 bags of different sizes every day,” said Shen Yingying, from the supermarket. “And during festivals or promotions, about 130,000 plastic bags will be taken away by customers every day.” Some customers have already started bringing their own cloth bags with them to carry their shopping home. “I have used a cloth bag for three or four years,” said Wang Ying, a Beijing resident. “And cashiers in supermarkets are all fine when I use my own bags.” However, a mass conversion (转变) to the use of cloth bags is unlikely to happen quickly. “Plastic bags offer great convenience to consumers,” said another resident, surnamed Sun. “My family use the plastic bags from supermarkets as waste bags.” Wang Yue, from the Beijing Committee of the China Communist Youth League, said: “It is a step-by-step process.” “The government should introduce polices to reduce the use of plastic bags, such as levying taxation (征税) on ‘white’ products.”
Other measures to try to protect the environment have already been taken by outlets(专营店) in the capital. WalMart Supermarkets in Beijing use degradable (能降解的) plastic bags in their outlets.
