It's like the term \at the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies in Nottingham - but has even more negative meanings, suggesting a certain vulgarity(粗俗).

\years ago,but it has always meant something rather different. During the communist revolution, from the 1920s to early 1950s, it was widely used to refer to landholders and gentry who would bully those beneath them.

This new usage of the term took off in September after a widely-shared joke about a rich, but

unhappy man, who goes to a Buddhist monk for advice, expecting to be told to live a more simple life. The monk replies instead with the phrase: \

Chinese Internet users are highly creative in their use of language, and are constantly inventing, and re-inventing words as a way of getting past censorship(审查) rules. The trouble with school is that you can’t choose the people you get to see every day. If you’re unlucky enough to be stuck with classmates who don’t really ―get‖ you, you’ve just got to try to make the best of it.

But that doesn’t mean you need to ―fit in‖, or at least in the way that people think. If you try

to transform yourself into a clone of everyone else, it won’t help you make friends. It’ll just make you feel like a fake.

You also shouldn’t shut down or refuse to be friends with everyone who doesn’t like you. If you do that, you’ll just make yourself miserable. Instead, you’ve got to work on being comfortable and confident with whom you are while ignoring all the haters. Keep on speaking up, asking questions and getting to know people better. If you send out positive energy, then people will generally send some back to you. A couple of them will stay the same, and you’re allowed to forget about them.

If you feel like you’re doing all that but still not getting anywhere, then don’t give up. Just expand your circle. Get a part-time job at a cool-looking place, join an after-school art class or youth group—do whatever it takes to find a couple of like-minded people to connect with. Even if you don’t find anyone right away, you’ll still be getting some more social experiences under your belt, and that’s always a good thing.

A fun book called Uncool, by Erin Elisabeth Conley, has some tips for people like you who want to stay positive at school while being true to your personality: ·Throw caution to the wind. ·Don’t bear others’ mistakes.

·Have patience with people who are different from you. ·Don’t change just because someone else thinks you should.

·Know that even though you may be a misfit, there’s always some place where you will be welcomed in the world.

33.According to the author, what should you do if you meet people who don’t appreciate you? A. Just give up.

B. Ask someone else for help. C. Show positive attitude toward them. D. Try your best to fit in with them.

34.The author agrees that you should take part in more activities in order to __________. A. get more chances of making friends B. lay a better foundation for your future jobs C. transform yourself into a clone.

D. make you feel like a fake.

35.In the book Uncool, Erin Elisabeth Conley thinks you should _________. A. always be kind to your friends B. keep your own personality C. bear others’ mistakes

D. help improve characters of others

二、阅读理解 (每小题1.5分,满分30分)

A

For the last couple of weeks, I had been stuck in front of my computer working on a project that was very important to me. My every waking hour was consumed by the project and although I imagined that I would feel happy after completing parts of the project, I was confused to find that

instead, I was feeling rather depressed. I tried a range of methods to help cheer myself up. I had a relaxing bath, cooked a delicious meal to enjoy with my family and even watched a lighthearted movie, but to no avail. It was only when I turned to meditation(沉思)for a solution that the answer came to me: turn to nature!

The very next day, I grabbed my camera and a bottle of water and set off to spend a few hours walking in a nature reserve, even though it was pouring with rain. Within a couple of minutes I felt alive again. To be honest, I felt like a young school girl again and had to stop myself from hopping along the path singing, \child. I think as adults we often try too hard to control our inner children and as a result we restrain(限制) our own spirits, which only leads to depression and stress.

Interestingly, it has been shown that people who spend 40 minutes walking in a nature reserve have a drop in their blood pressure levels, but this does not happen when they spend a similar amount of time walking in a busy city centre.

If you feel a little low in spirit and know that you have spent too much time indoors, relax completely, remove your shoes and let your inner child come out and play. 21.The author walked in a nature reserve in the rain in order to__________. A. take photos B. cheer herself up C. hop along the path D. find a solution to the project

22.The underlined part \A. uninteresting B. unrelated C. unsuccessful D. unexpected 23.In the author's opinion, __________. A.a bath can make people relaxed

B. adults should express their inner feelings freely C. walking in a busy city centre harms people's health D. depression is usually caused by hard work

24.The last paragraph mainly serves as a(n) __________. A. suggestion B. explanation

C. introduction D. reminder

B

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal (信号).Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.

Different cultures emphasize(强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust.Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in ―small talk‖, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job.In many European countries — like the UK or France —people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafés rather than at the office.

Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures.I once made a speech in Thailand.I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead, there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much.In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.

Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems.Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude.In fact, this is just because the culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.

People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment (多元文化环境) will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other. 25.In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to ______ . A.develop closer relations B.share the same culture C.get to know each other D.keep each other company 26.The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that _____ . A.the English prefer to make long speeches

42.A. poor B. formal 43.A. often B. usually 44.A. employment B. improvement 45.A. carefully B. happily 46.A. Confidently B. Proudly 47.A. broken B. perfect

C. good D. modern D. hardly D. development D. rapidly D. Nervously D. fluent D. failed D. sighed D. drive D. deliver D. reward D. easy D. strength D. modest

C. sometimes C. judgment C. aimlessly

C. Calmly C. written

48.A. refused B. decided 49.A. stopped B. continued 50.A. break B. slip 51.A. read B. write 52.A. freedom B. success 53.A. terrible B. excellent 54.A. belief B. patience 55.A. shy

B. lonely

C. pretended C. left C. pass

C. attempt C. discussion C. honest C. confidence C. selfless

Dear Xiao Ming

Glad to write to you! Last time I told you that I wanted to be a volunteer in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. These days I am attending some training courses and learn that in order to be a good volunteer, we should learn about body language as well as foreign languages. I find it interesting. I’d like to share it with you.

As we all know, every culture has its own body language. Take Greetings for example, the French are open-minded, they shake hands and kiss each other on each cheek when they meet people they know. Men from Middle East and other Muslin countries often stand close to other men to talk, but they will never touch women, they just nod at women. In general, people all over

the world now greet each other by shaking hands, but the Japanese prefer to bow.

None of these actions is either good or bad, however, studying it will help reduce misunderstanding between peoples and avoid the difficulties in communication.

So much for these, I must stop now. Looking forward to your letter. Yours Xiao Gang
