A few minutes ago, walking back from lunch, I started to cross the street when I heard the sound of a coin dropping. It wasn't much but, as I turned, my eyes caught the heads of several other people turning too. A woman had dropped what appeared to be a dime. The tinkling sound of a coin dropping on pavement is an attention-getter. It can be nothing more than a penny. Whatever the coin is, no one ignores the sound of it. It got me thinking about sounds again. We are besieged by so many sounds that attract the most attention. People in New York City seldom turn to look when a fire engine, a police car or an ambulance comes screaming along the street. When I'm in New York, I'm a New Yorker. I don't turn either. Like the natives. I hardly hear a siren there. At home in my little town in Connecticut, it's different. The distant wail of a police car, an emergency vehicle or a fire siren brings me to my feet if I'm seated and brings me to the window if

I'm in bed. It's the quietest sounds that have most effect on us, not the loudest. In the middle of the night, I can hear a dripping tap a hundred yards away through three closed doors. I've been hearing little creaking noises and sounds which my imagination turns into footsteps in the middle of the night for twenty-five years in our house. How come I never hear those sounds in the daytime?
I'm quite clear in my mind what the good sounds are and what the bad sounds are.
I've turned against whistling, for instance. I used to think of it as the mark of a happy worker but lately I've been associating the whistler with a nervous person making compulsive noises. The tapping, tapping, tapping of my typewriter as the keys hit the paper is a lovely sound to me. I often like the sound of what I write better than the looks of it. 59. The sound of a coin dropping makes people __________.
A. think of money B. look at each other C. pay attention to it D. stop crossing the street 60. He dislikes whistling because ___________. A. he is tired of it B. it reminds him of tense people C. he used to be happier
D. he doesn't like workers
61. What kind of sound does he find pleasant? A. Tapping of his typewriter. B. Clinking sound of keys. C. Tinkling sound of a coin dropping. D. Creaking sounds. 62. How does the writer feel about sounds in general? A. They make him feel at home. C. He prefers silence to loud noises. B He thinks they should be ignored. D. He believes they are part of our lives.

Airbus says it has turned the corner after a crisis connected to production problems and heated argument in the boardroom on its A380 super-jumbo project that has gone on for the past year. Speaking at the Paris air show, Louis Gallois, CEO of the European plane maker, said, \back.\
Airbus, which announced a raft of orders on the first day of the show, is competing with Boeing, its American rival, for the title of the largest plane maker in the world. Boeing is expected to disclose the numbers of orders for its 787 Dreamliner soon. Airbus orders disclosed on Monday included Qatar Airways confirming a $16bn order for 80 A350 Airbus planes and ordering three A380 super-jumbos for about $750m. Boeing and Airbus are also competing for orders from aircraft leasing (租赁) firms. Orders from these companies - who rank highly among the biggest global buyers of aircraft - are often regarded as a sign of how successful a model will be in the long term. Airbus also made sure of orders from US Airways that are worth $10bn for 22 of its A350 jets, 60 A320s and ten of its A330-200 wide-body planes. It is very necessary to build sustainability (可持续性) criteria into the supply chain of any green fuel project in order to ensure that there is no contrary effect on the surrounding environment and social structures. The report produced by the investors expresses concern that many companies may not be fully aware of the possible traps in the biofuel section. Production of corn and soya beans has increased greatly in the last years as an eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels but environmental and human rights campaigners are worried that this will lead to destruction of rain forests. Food prices could also go up as there is increased competition for crops as both foodstuffs and sources of fuel. Last week, the UN warned that biofuels could have dangerous side effects and said that steps need to be taken to make sure that land changed over to grow biofuels does not damage the environment or cause civil unrest. There is already great concern about palm oil, which is used in many foods in addition to being an important biofuel, as rain forests are being cleared in some countries and people driven from their homes to create palm oil plantations.
An analyst and author of the investors' report says that biofuels are not a cure for climate

They include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, bone loss, arthritis (关节炎), and depression. Walking also can help you lose weight.
Fast walking is good for the heart. It lowers the blood pressure. It raises the amount of good cholesterol (胆固醇) in the blood. Researchers say walking can sharply reduce the risk of suffering a heart attack. Studies have also shown that walking for 30 minutes a day can delay and possibly prevent the development of diabetes. People who are overweight have an especially high risk to develop this disease. Walking strengthens the muscles and builds up the bones that they are attached to. Studies show that walking could decrease the risk of developing osteoporosis (骨质疏松症). Walking can also help ease the pain of arthritis in areas where bones are joined. This is because walking strengthens

the muscles around the bones. Experts say walking is one of the safest ways to exercise. There is a low risk of injuries. So it is good for people who are starting an exercise program for the first time and for older people. A walking program is easy to start. You should wear loose clothes and good shoes. There are shoes that are designed especially for lots of walking.
How fast should you walk? For the best effect, doctors say you should walk fast enough to cause you to breathe hard. Yet you should still be able to talk. Let your arms move freely while you walk. There are no rules to starting a walking program. You might walk short distances. Or you might walk up hills to strengthen your leg muscles. Health experts say you can gain the most from a walking program if you walk at about five kilometers an hour for 30 minutes a day. You should do this about five times a week.
