Why Work on Good Relationships With Teachers? A good relationship with a teacher today may help you in the future. You will need teachers' written recommendations to apply to a college or for a job after high school. Teachers know about grants and scholarships. And they may often appoint students to student offices or recommend students as volunteers for special community programs. All of these activities can help you get into college or get a good job. Teachers are another group of adults in

your life who can look out for you, guide you, and provide you with an adult perspective. Many are willing to answer questions, offer advice, and help with personal problems.

Developing Good Teacher-Student Relationships. You can do lots of things to get a good connection going with your teacher. First, do the obvious stuff: show up for class on time, with all assignments completed. Be alert, be respectful, and ask questions. Show an interest in the subject and show the teacher that you care and you are a dedicated student. You can also schedule a private conference during a teacher's free period. Use this time to get extra help, ask questions, inquire about a career in the subject, or talk about your progress in class. You may be surprised to learn that your teacher is a bit more relaxed one-on-one than when lecturing in front of the whole class.

It is possible to try too hard, though. Here are some things to avoid when trying to establish a relationship with your teacher: not being sincere, trying to be teacher's pet, and giving costly gifts.

What are common teacher-student problems? If you're having problems with a teacher, try to figure out why. If you don't like the subject being taught, it might be helpful to think of classes as stepping stones toward a bigger goal, like getting a diploma. Simply try to find the practical value in classes you don‘t like.

If you find a subject hard, talk to your teacher about extra tutoring. If you find it boring, talk to your teacher about ways to see the subject in a different light. Ian constantly fell asleep in his sophomore history class because the past seemed so removed from reality. But things changed after the teacher talked to Ian and found out that his great-grandfather had fought in World War II. The teacher suggested Ian use his great-grandfather's letters in his project. Not only did Ian get an A, he also learned a lot about a family member he barely remembered from childhood.

What if you just don't like the teacher? Personality can come into play. People naturally just get along better with some people than with others — it's impossible to like everyone all the time. Common courtesy and respect are basic requirements of any relationship. You don‘t have to like your teacher or totally agree with him or her, but it is necessary to be polite. If you need to be out of school for medical or other reasons, let your teacher know. And it‘s your responsibility to make up the work from missed class.

What would you do if you don‘t get along well with your teacher? Here are a few things you can try to make a difficult relationship work: Meet with the teacher and try to voice your true feeling, so as to see if you can work it out between the two of you. Ask yourself, \her personality or lectures, try to find a subject in which your teacher is very

knowledgeable. Focus on that part of the teacher's personality, and use it as a tool for learning. Talk to students who are doing well in the class and ask them for tips. If you still can't get along, make an appointment with the school guidance counselor, who can offer many tips and suggestions. If your relationship problems can't be solved in school, then it's time to tell your parents or guardians. Let them meet with your teacher and try to work it out.

Teachers are there for more than just lectures and homework. They can help you learn how to function as an adult and a lifelong learner. Undoubtedly, there will be a few teachers along the way who you‘ll always remember and who might change your life forever.

You can get very creative when it comes to learning the English language. Nowadays you don't have to limit yourself to reading dry outdated textbooks to improve your reading, writing, and speaking skills. While a good, up-to-date English grammar book is important, it's more helpful to actively learn English through a variety of other means.

There are many remarkable ways you can master the words and phrases that make up the English language. These ways go beyond traditional textbook lessons to build your vocabulary. They will not replace solid foundational teachings, for it is important to know the basics that underlie this complex language.

Learning any language should be a fun and enjoyable experience. For this purpose, you should use many different methods to learn it. In so doing, you are less likely to get bored with the process. Limiting yourself to one way of learning is a sure way to invite dullness. When it does, you tend to lose interest and may even give up entirely. That's the worst thing that can happen as then all your previous efforts

go to waste.

With that in mind, we offer four different ways to improve your English skills. They involve different mediums and enable you to build your English vocabulary through entertainment and active participation.

A small electronic device such as Kindle (a wireless reading device) housing your favourite novels, or your laptop (笔记本电脑) stored with books, are all ways to go digital when it comes to reading. While it's great to have a library of paperbacks (平装) or hardcover (精装) books, it's not practical to have these when travelling. With a quality laptop or an electronic book reader you can still read with satisfaction wherever you go. This means you have no excuse not to finish that novel as you promise. It also means you can always find time to brush up on your English no matter where you are, or when you are there. What's great about a laptop or the newer versions of electronic book readers is that they're getting less expensive. In addition, greater storage capabilities means they can hold more books, which means you have your own library to go.

What is the better way to combine words with visuals and reap the benefits of both. Renting or buying a foreign film with English subtitles (字幕) is a great way to learn English. Many quality foreign films are available on the market and they deal with various subjects. What's great about this way is that you can match the words on the screen with the visuals. These visuals or moving pictures support the text that accompanies them. This means you get a better understanding of the words on the screen. A difficult dialogue presented through subtitles can become much clearer when performers acti out those words right before your eyes. You will gain a deeper understanding of any new words from the actions on the screen. Why not try playing board games such as Trivial Pursuit and other similar games to build your vocabulary? How about challenging someone to a game of Scrabble, where you can work at building words and your personal vocabulary together. These games provide hours of entertainment and instruction at the same time. They cause you to participate and take the initiative in learning new words. Games are a
